About
Fatal Light Awareness Program (FLAP) Canada is a registered Canadian charity widely recognized as the pre-eminent authority on the bird-building collision issue. For almost 30 years, FLAP Canada has engaged millions of people with dozens of campaigns and initiatives with one goal: keep birds safe from deadly collisions with buildings.
Over 1 billion birds die every year in North America from bird-building collisions. Some frequently encountered species prone to these are white-throated sparrow, ovenbird and the ruby-throated hummingbird.
The organization creates awareness through:
- Developing guidelines, policies and safeguards
- Advocacy and education
- Data collection and research
- Rescue and rehabilitation.
Safe Flight Home is an example of using public art to bring awareness of these issues to the local communities- the project culminated in large scale, bird-safe murals on the windows of Downsview Park, Finch West and York University Stations that will prevent a large number of collisions.
