Port Credit Muskoka Chairs

This project is part of I HeART Main Street, a program supporting Business Improvement Areas (BIAs) with the support they need to activate their main streets through public art and placemaking. This program engages BIAs, local artists and businesses across Ontario to create more vibrant and safe communities.

Project Type: Temporary Exhibit

Artist: Katrina Canedo

Artist Statement: Katrina Canedo’s muskoka chairs are inspired by the beautiful and lively atmosphere of the Port Credit community and area. One chair is a predominantly nautical themed design that contains waves of water with kelp flowing throughout for the base, and images of a couple of nautical objects, such as an anchor and a life buoy floating on the foreground.

The second chair contains themes associated with nature and has images of various plants and flowers at the base, as well as a couple of butterflies in the foreground. Both chairs are essentially a fun and fresh take on the Port Credit area’s beautiful lakefront surroundings.

About the BIA: Since the Port Credit BIA formed in 1977, it has been working hard to boost the unique businesses and vibrant community within the Port Credit village boundaries. The Port Credit BIA is made up of over 400 business members, including delicious restaurants, eclectic retailers and professional services, all located steps from the beautiful waterfront.

Here’s how it all works. The Port Credit BIA is a grassroots collection at heart. Local businesses owners are elected to the Port Credit BIA Board of Directors and Committees, the bodies that manage the BIA. The Port Credit BIA also includes the City of Mississauga Councillor and a few staff members.

The people that make up the Port Credit BIA all work together to help make the neighbourhood the best it can be. Whether they’re picking up trash, planting flowers, organizing events, sponsoring local initiatives, bringing local issues to the City Councillor or promoting local businesses online, the Port Credit BIA is constantly pushing to make the Port Credit area a great place to be and do business.
