Belonging Sidewalk Decal

This project is part of I HeART Main Street, a program supporting Business Improvement Areas (BIAs) with the support they need to activate their main streets through public art and placemaking. This program engages BIAs, local artists and businesses across Ontario to create more vibrant and safe communities.

Project Type: Temporary Exhibit

Artist: Yaw Tony

Artist Statement: Belonging is defined as the happiness felt in a secure relationship. Relationships are the key to life, and the need for interpersonal relationships motivate behavior such as belonging, friendship, trust, acceptance, love, receiving, and giving affection. This is the fabric that weaves good communities. We belong for a reason and Yaw Tony strongly believes we can belong effectively and purposefully only on the basis of self-discovery. Our communities are as propitious as our individual families. Pape Village community has the potential to become that healthy family base community that can affect and transform its surrounding communities.

The use of bold COLours (Collection of ourselves) is representative of the individuals living in Pape Village. Yaw Tony sees every individual as a gem. Every undiscovered precious gem is still valuable, and every unknown, undiscovered gem still exists so as every one of us in our communities is as valuable with the gifts and talents. The amazing phenomenon is that we don’t give ourselves the talents and gifts we possess so it's highly important to understand and know why we possess them, so we can contribute dearly to the communities we live in.

The decals were placed along Pape Ave between Mortimer Ave and Gamble Ave.
