This project is part of I HeART Main Street, a program supporting Business Improvement Areas (BIAs) with the support they need to activate their main streets through public art and placemaking. This program engages BIAs, local artists and businesses across Ontario to create more vibrant and safe communities.
Project Type: Temporary Exhibit
Artist: Mel Hayes
Artist Statement: Wanting to bring more public art and vibrancy into the community, MarkeTo BIA is participating in I HeART Main Street to create beautifully designed sidewalk decals as part of a summer walking challenge for residents and visitors to walk the area three times to complete 10,000 steps for the day.
The theme for this activation is bright, vibrant summer colours and abstract shapes to reflect the cultural diversity across business and property owners in the neighbourhood. As COVID-19 has left the community stuck at home and less mobile, the hope through this challenge is for participants to meet the incredible businesses in BIA while getting daily exercise for the day by following vibrant sidewalk decals laid down throughout the community.
These decals were placed all along Dufferin St between Lawrence Ave W. and Stayner Ave!
About the BIA: The MarkeTo District BIA is located between Lawrence Avenue West and Dufferin Street all the way down to Wingold Ave. Formed in 2014, we are home to over 50 businesses including one of the largest Catholic bookstores in Canada, Pauline Books and Media, as well as a Lady York Foods, a shopping destination for specialty Italian foods. The BIA hosts multiple events every year and devotes all financial resources to community development and improvement to ensure positive stakeholder outcomes.
Thank you to our additional supporters!
