This project is part of I HeART Main Street, a program supporting Business Improvement Areas (BIAs) with the support they need to activate their main streets through public art and placemaking. This program engages BIAs, local artists and businesses across Ontario to create more vibrant and safe communities.
Project Type: Temporary Exhibit
Artist: Rhonda Franks
Artist Statement: The themes Live, Shop, Eat and Explore were represented on four sidewalk decals with the added challenge of each decal containing just one corporate colour. The decals needed to capture the unique, retail, food, and lifestyle opportunities in the charming town of Tillsonburg. With so much to offer, the goal was to illustrate as many things as possible in a bright, fun, contemporary way. Digitally drawn doodles for each theme were arranged to surround stylized type highlighting heritage stops, shopping, and activities such as Turtle Fest, as well as the rural nature of the area. A few doodles make an appearance on multiple decals, indicating how each theme is interwoven as a part of the vibrant little town.
About the BIA: Downtown Tillsonburg BIA uses the combined strength of all the members in the Business Improvement Area to beautify and promote the downtown in order to maintain a retail shopping district capable of meeting the day to day and specialty needs of residents.
