This project is part of I HeART Main Street, a program supporting Business Improvement Areas (BIAs) with the support they need to activate their main streets through public art and placemaking. This program engages BIAs, local artists and businesses across Ontario to create more vibrant and safe communities.
Project Type: Temporary Exhibit
Artist: Justine Wong
Artist Statement: Gathering at the Pearl is a sweet ode to all the times Justine has loitered between the intersections of Chinatown and Kensington Market. As a child, Justine grew up on the steps of Bright Pearl, greeted and protected by the two lions, enjoying dim sum with her family. She would continue to spend many of her formative years in Kensington, where she would come to meet folks from all walks of life. The mural is a celebration of the many different worlds coming together, forming a lively parade towards a glowing pearl. The beginning and end of the activation is protected by the presence of a Dragon’s head and tail, who cradles all who walk along the path together.
About the BIA: The Toronto Chinatown Business Improvement Area (CBIA), established in 2007, is a not-for-profit community based City of Toronto agency. They work closely with three levels of government, area residents, BIAs and other groups to keep the Chinatown community strong!
